Funcosil WS, SNW or SNL [ultra]?

Which product replaces the familiar Funcosil SNL?

For many years, Funcosil SNL was one of the best-known Remmers products for hydrophobic facade impregnation. However, the original Funcosil SNL is no longer available as the current product in the markets concerned. Remmers has developed and introduced newer water-based products that take over this type of application.

The important point for customers throughout Europe is that the replacement does not have the same name in every country. Depending on the market, customers may encounter Funcosil WS, Funcosil SNW or Funcosil SNL [ultra]. These are not simply different labels for the old SNL, but current products with their own technical specifications.

Important:
If you are searching for the old Funcosil SNL, do not automatically assume that a product carrying the name SNL [ultra] is the same formulation. The original SNL was a different, solvent-based product. The newer products are water-based formulations.

What happened to Funcosil SNL?

The original Funcosil SNL has been discontinued as the previous generation of Remmers hydrophobic facade impregnation. It has been replaced by newer water-based products.

What makes the situation confusing is that Remmers uses different product names in different European markets. A customer in Germany may therefore search for one product name, while a customer in the Netherlands, France, Spain or another European country encounters another.

For this reason, searching only by the old product name is not always sufficient. The application, formulation, article number and current technical data sheet should be taken into account.

Product generation Product Market / naming Formulation
Previous generation Funcosil SNL Former product name Solvent-based
Current generation Funcosil SNL [ultra] Used in selected European markets Water-based
Current generation Funcosil SNW Dutch market / selected markets Water-based
Current generation Funcosil WS Used in several European markets Water-based

The old SNL versus the new water-based products

One of the most important differences is the change in formulation. The original Funcosil SNL was a solvent-based silane/siloxane impregnation. The newer products WS, SNW and SNL [ultra] belong to the water-based generation.

Characteristic Old Funcosil SNL Current WS / SNW / SNL [ultra]
Product generation Previous generation Current generation
Carrier Solvent-based Water-based
Formulation Silane/siloxane solution Water-based hydrophobic formulations
Odour Typical solvent odour Water-based / low-odour formulations
Active substance Approx. 7% Approx. 10% or more, depending on product
The important distinction:
The current products should not be presented simply as the old SNL under a different name. They represent the newer water-based generation that has replaced the previous SNL product in the relevant markets.

Why are there three different replacement names?

Remmers products are marketed through different national and regional assortments. As a result, the successor to the previous generation of facade impregnation is not necessarily presented under one identical product name throughout Europe.

This is particularly relevant when customers purchase across borders. A contractor who has previously worked with Funcosil SNL may search for exactly that name, while the current Remmers product available in his country has a different name.

Think of the product names as market-specific names within the newer generation:
  • Funcosil WS
  • Funcosil SNW
  • Funcosil SNL [ultra]

The exact suitability of each product should always be checked against the current technical documentation for the substrate and application.

Funcosil WS, SNW and SNL [ultra]

Although the names are different, the three current products share the same general application field: hydrophobic impregnation of porous mineral building materials.

Characteristic Funcosil WS Funcosil SNW Funcosil SNL [ultra]
Water-based Yes Yes Yes
Silane / siloxane based Yes Yes Silane-based
Active substance Approx. 10% Approx. 10% >10%
Solvent-free Yes Yes Yes
Water-repellent Yes Yes Yes
Vapour-permeable Yes Yes Yes
UV-resistant Yes Yes Yes
Alkali-resistant Yes Yes Yes
PFAS-free Yes Yes Yes

These similarities explain why the three products can be considered part of the same current water-based Funcosil generation. They should nevertheless not be treated as technically identical products: application rates, packaging, technical specifications and national availability can differ.

Funcosil WS

Funcosil WS is a water-based silane/siloxane emulsion for hydrophobic impregnation. It is intended for porous mineral substrates such as brick, sand-lime brick, natural stone, mineral renders and aerated concrete.

The product is suitable for protection against driving rain, reducing water absorption, refreshing older hydrophobic treatments and subsequent impregnation of suitable mineral coatings.

Typical characteristics
  • Water-based silane/siloxane emulsion
  • Approx. 10% active substance
  • Solvent-free
  • Water-repellent
  • Vapour-diffusion open
  • UV- and alkali-resistant
  • PFAS-free formulation

Funcosil SNW

Funcosil SNW is another current water-based silane/siloxane impregnation. It is supplied as an aqueous emulsion and contains approximately 10% active substance.

SNW is particularly relevant to customers who previously used the older SNL product but are now looking for a current water-based Remmers solution. The precise application should always be checked against the current technical data sheet.

Funcosil SNW in short
  • Current water-based product
  • Silane/siloxane based
  • Approx. 10% active substance
  • Solvent-free
  • Odourless
  • Vapour-permeable
  • PFAS-free

Funcosil SNL [ultra]

Funcosil SNL [ultra] is a current water-based product with its own product identity and article number. It should therefore be distinguished clearly from the discontinued classic Funcosil SNL.

The current technical information specifies more than 10% active substance. Its application areas include porous mineral facade materials, protection against driving rain, reduction of water absorption and renewal of existing hydrophobic treatments.

Funcosil SNL [ultra] in short
  • Current-generation product
  • Water-based formulation
  • More than 10% active substance
  • Solvent-free
  • Water-repellent
  • Vapour-diffusion open
  • UV- and alkali-resistant
  • PFAS-free

What does this mean if you used Funcosil SNL before?

If your previous project specifications refer to Funcosil SNL, it is important not to order a product solely on the basis of the name.

The original SNL is no longer the current product and the modern replacements are water-based products. Depending on the country, you may therefore be directed to Funcosil WS, Funcosil SNW or Funcosil SNL [ultra].

If you need to replace an older specification, compare the technical data sheet, substrate, consumption and application method before starting the work.

Searching for the old Funcosil SNL?
You may find a different current product depending on where you are located in Europe. Search for Funcosil WS, Funcosil SNW or Funcosil SNL [ultra] as well as the old product name.

Our European product overview

Because our customers can be located throughout Europe, we deliberately show all three current product names on this page. This makes it easier to recognise the relationship between products when a customer encounters a different Funcosil name on another national Remmers website.

You may know this name Current product generation Key point
Funcosil SNL Previous generation No longer the current product; solvent-based formulation

Frequently asked questions

Is Funcosil SNL still available?

The original Funcosil SNL is no longer the current product. Remmers has moved to newer water-based products that are marketed under different names in different European markets.

What replaced Funcosil SNL?

The current replacement generation includes Funcosil WS, Funcosil SNW and Funcosil SNL [ultra]. The exact product name depends on the market.

Is Funcosil SNL [ultra] the same as the old Funcosil SNL?

No. The old SNL was a solvent-based formulation. SNL [ultra] is a separate, current-generation water-based product.

Why does Remmers use different names?

Remmers maintains different national and regional product assortments. Consequently, customers in different European markets can encounter different product names for current hydrophobic facade impregnation products.

Are WS, SNW and SNL [ultra] identical?

No. They are separate products with their own technical specifications. They share important characteristics and applications, but consumption, formulation details, packaging and other technical parameters can differ.

Which product should I use?

The correct product depends on the substrate, its porosity and the intended application. Always consult the current technical data sheet and carry out a test area where appropriate.

Technical documentation

For professional applications, always use the current Technical Data Sheet and Safety Data Sheet for the specific product and market. Product names alone are not sufficient to establish technical equivalence.
